While growing up, many families of color like mine didn't have frequent conversations that looked past their present. My notion of "legacy" came much later in eye-opening discussions with diverse groups of professionals, peers and news articles.
Although my discussions about legacy happened later than some, my takeaway was always, "How could I contribute to the larger conversation?"
The answer, I've found, is through my art.
During the worldly 2020 chaos, I went into the art studio and worked on a painting to settle my thoughts through the cracks of injustice, crisis, pandemic, and other outside noises. It was a time to clear my head, listen, observe, jot down notes, get frustrated, get upset, get to work, rejuvenate, revamp, rejoice, and most of all, find absolute freedom amidst brush strokes.
Out of that, I created the commemorative art on this page as a mere gesture to represent the first national acknowledgment of Juneteenth in the U.S. In this piece, an African American boy clings to a wagon wheel in jubilance. He spreads good news to African and Indigenous slaves in that they are now "free" on June 19th, 1865, in Galveston, TX.
There have been some great projects and teams along my advertising journey thus far. Still, I was also part of many corporate layers for creative output. But my paintings are something simple, from my own hands and imagination to share with the world through a legacy lens.
My aim is to have this part of my talent contribute, reflect, and serve as a reminder to others and myself to look beyond our circumstances. Be intentional, purposeful, awake and alive in whatever you want to leave behind. Starting NOW!
You are welcome to join the conversation and connect with others,
as we all strive to build a better version of our tomorrow.
