I'm Derrick.
Also known as "DJ." I am an award-winning talent who thrives on collaboration and independent thinking while implementing my art, advertising, and design background.
I received a BFA in Illustration at Virginia Commonwealth University and acquired my Master's Degree from VCU Brandcenter to push my art and creativity to tackle big ideas in advertising.
With a new sense of rejuvenation and purpose, I began painting more. I aim for my paintings to vibrate, educate, and decorate beyond the canvas as I capture people, animals, and dramatic lighting with vivid color.

Inspiration
As I continue to call Chicago home,
I create artfully crafted pieces, mentor younger talent, instruct and relentlessly seek to evolve. I am inspired by culture and techniques from old masters like Sargent, Basquiat, T.H. Benton and many contemporary Instagram artists to inform my work.
Techniques
I often use acrylic with other mixed mediums, and I've recently started experimenting with oils more. Whether it's using acrylics by themselves or with oils, gouache, pastels or color pencils, I want my paintings to vibrate, educate, and decorate beyond the canvas.
